Jennifer Smith, Executive Director

Jennifer came to Congregation Beth Israel through a circuitous route beginning in Atlanta, GA.  Upon graduating high school, Jennifer attended college in the Northeast to escape the heat of the South and received her undergraduate degree in Political Science and Behavioral Science at Drew University in NJ.  Realizing that heat is much perferable to snow, and moving on to the next stage in her life, Jennifer moved out West to Sacramento, California to receive her law degree and certificate in Governmental Affairs at University of the Pacific - McGeorge School of Law.  After a couple of years in the California legislature, the call of home was too great to ignore and she moved back to Atlanta.  While working at the Marcus Jewish Community Center of Atlanta, Jennifer obtained her Masters of Public Administration in Non Profit Management from Kennesaw State University in GA.

Jennifer spent 8 years at the JCC in Atlanta, working as the Program Director in the Sports, Camps & Fitness Department.  One facet of her job was to work with the JCC Maccabi Athletes for Team Atlanta as the delegation head.  At the San Antonio Maccabi Games, Jennifer met her now-husband Daniel. Jennifer jokes that if he lived anywhere else but Austin, they'd be living in Atlanta right now, but he was lucky that she liked Austin and she relocated here.  Jennifer and Daniel welcomed Joshua Aaron into their family in February 2008.

Pamela Hanna, Membership Services

Pamela Sue Hanna grew up in the Houston area. She has lived in Austin since 1993.
Pam started working at Beth Israel in July 2006. Pam likes working at CBI because “I get to see the CDC kids every day which is fun – especially the children learning to walk.” She also loves that every day at CBI, Pam gets to do something new and different – from baking cakes and cookies for the Oneg to depositing checks at the bank, working the door for the Annual Gala to buying candles for the Hannukah menorah. Every year, Pam has begun to look forward to the community and the rituals that she gets to be a part of, such as the Passover seder as well as hearing the shofar.

Tony Davila, Senior Custodian

Antonio Robles Davila was born in Mendoza, Texas. Tony has lived in Austin for 25 years. Tony and his wife Maria have been married for 47 years. They just celebrated their 47 anniversary by renewing their vows. Maria Candna Davila worked at CDC for 12 years. Maria just retired from the CDC this summer and will now stay home to take care of their grandson Matthew.

Tony likes to work at CBI because “the people are good to me.” Tony likes work better during the school year because he loves to watch the kids grow up. Besides working at CBI, Tony’s favorite thing to do is fish in Rockport on the coast, preferably during February and March. Tony and his sons like to catch Speckled Trout and Red fish in September and October. Tony and his daughter Amy cook the fish together. Tony joins the surf catch tournament in Padre Island with his sons and sons-in-law each year.

Tony wants to say a special thank you to “Miss Paula Kent who hired me 18 years ago. May she rest in peace.”

Marilyn Epstein, Receptionist

Beth Israel has been a part of my life formany years. It is a warm, welcoming congregation for people of all ages. I have been a part of the Child Development Center and have watched children grow and celebrate many Jewish milestones here at Beth Israel. Now that I’ve retired after 18 years at the CDC (and am just working as the part-time receptionist to keep me busy), my friendships have grown through Beth Israel’s many social and educational activities. I am proud to be a part of a congregation that welcomes the stranger and reaches out to people in need.
