Every week, Shabbat is that wonderful Jewish holiday that gives us the gift of rest. Should we choose, we can take the opportunity to slow down from our busy lives and reflect on the week that has passed, celebrating with our sacred community through music and prayer.
Just like there are many different types of Jews, we at CBI offer many different kinds of Shabbat worship opportunities. Whether you seek an upbeat, contemporary service or one that uses more classical/traditional reform music settings of the liturgy, or if you have small children, we have a service that can meet your needs!
Friday Night Shabbat Observance:
-
6:30pm First and 7:00pm All Other Fridays : This is our "regular" Shabbat evening worship service ... filled with music and joy, we invite you to come by after work and settle into Shabbat with this friendly, hour-long worship service.
-
Before Every Friday Night Service, starting at 6:00pm: We host a "Proneg" starting at 6:00pm before every Friday night service, consisting of wine and a bit of a nosh: cheese, fruit, and crackers ... what a great way to end the work week and ease into Shabbat!
-
Second Friday of the month from September through May at 6:00pm: We host a "Classical Reform" Shabbat worship service for worshipers who enjoy the older style of Reform worship (with much more English included). Filled with older melodies (including many English favorites of days gone by), this service will appeal to worshipers seeking a more formal style of worship.
-
After Every Friday night Service: After every Shabbat service, CBI hosts a wonderful Oneg in Smith Auditorium ... enjoy lots of sweet treats to delight the stomach and great fellowship with other worshipers!
-
After the First Friday Service: On the first Friday night of every month (except July - and this year April, because it is the first night Seder), we invite you to join us for Shabbat dinner following services, courtesy of CBI's wonderful Sisterhood. Our Shabbat dinners are always free and open to the community (no RSVP required, although we hope you might consider a donation to help cover expenses if you are able).
Saturday Morning Shabbat Observance and Havdalah Services:
-
Most Second and Fourth Saturdays: On most Second and Fourth Saturdays at 9:30am in our Sanctuary from September through May, we host a fabulous "Tot Shabbat" aimed at our littlest worshipers (aimed at kids age 0-5, although older siblings are always welcome). After a short service with Rabbi Folberg or Rabbi Olshein, our "mini-minyan-aires" enjoy a little craft project with their parents, a snack, and then time together out on our playground ... this is a great way for you and your kids to celebrate Shabbat together!
- Saturday Morning Torah Study: Every Saturday from 9:15-10:15am, Rabbi Folberg or Rabbi Olshein leads a study of the weekly Torah portion in English (occasionally, there is a guest rabbi) ... no Hebrew required. Free and open to the entire community!
- Saturday Morning Services: Every Saturday at 10:30am, we have warm, participatory community-inclusive Shabbat morning services during which a child might help lead worship and become a Bar or Bat Mitzvah , someone might choose to become Jewish, a baby might receive his or her Hebrew name, or a couple might receive a blessing before their wedding. After these services, the entire congregation is invited to celebrate with the child's family at the Kiddush luncheon.
As you can see from this short list, every Shabbat at CBI is meant to be a warm, community-filled celebration!
Please see the page entitled "Worship" for the details explaining all the different types of worship services we offer.
