Statement from URJ President Rabbi Rick Jacobs on Returning to In-Person Gatherings

April 30 Letter from CBI President Laura Corman and Senior Rabbi Steve Folberg

Dear Friends,

In consultation with the Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees, Rabbi Folberg and I have decided to keep Congregation Beth Israel closed throughout the month of May. We’ve made this decision to ensure the health and safety of our clergy, staff, congregants, and preschoolers. Although we all crave the time when we can worship and learn at the synagogue, at this point we judge this to be unsafe. Rabbi Folberg and I made this decision in line with the Jewish value of p’kuach nefesh, which teaches us that saving a life supersedes all other commandments. Rabbi David Stern, senior rabbi at Temple Emanu-el in Dallas, coauthored an excellent response to Governor Abbot’s recent order lifting restrictions on houses of worship. We agree with this point of view and will reassess our reopening decisions with each coming month.

If you haven’t had the chance to explore them, CBI continues to offer a wide variety of virtual worship and study opportunities.

Please note

  • The Board of Trustees voted to extend by one month the distribution of our 2020-2021 budget and the date of our Annual Meeting.
    • The budget will be sent out on May 28th
    • The Annual Meeting will be held on June 28th.
  • At this time, we cannot know if our Annual Meeting will be held in person or virtually. We will notify you of our decision by mid-June.

We hope that you are able to stay home and stay healthy!

l’shalom,

Laura Corman, President, Congregation Beth Israel
