Repro Shabbat Returns

Another year has gone by, and we have returned once again to Repro Shabbat. But something feels different this year. And perhaps you’re feeling it, too? There was a moment earlier this week when I asked someone, why are we even doing Repro Shabbat anymore? What’s the point? Doesn’t this fight, and really many of the other social justice issues we’ve been fighting for, seem futile?
And yet, I can’t sit idly by and pretend like everything will just get better if I wait it out. That is not how Tikkun Olam (repairing the world) works. It’s not how life, humanity, or anything works. We are the ones obligated to keep moving, even when it’s hard, especially when it feels impossible.
Therefore, this Shabbat, we will once again gather to celebrate (or commemorate) Repro Shabbat and focus our efforts on establishing Reproductive Freedom for all. As Jews, this is paramount to our belief in Pikuach Nefesh, the preservation of life. If we, as a society, could achieve Reproductive Freedom, every single person in the world would be able to parent the way they want, or they could choose to not parent. It also means ensuring the health and wellbeing of every person who becomes pregnant, no matter their skin color. A world with true Reproductive Freedom includes making choices for you and your family with no repercussions, the security that you will not be criminalized for taking care of yourself, and the assurance that healthcare, all healthcare, will be provided without fear.
So, how do I find the strength to keep on fighting? What am I doing to boost my capacity to move forward, despite the seemingly futility of it all? First, I am looking to others to do this work in partnership because there is certainly strength in numbers. Second, I am emboldened by the younger generations who have taken up the torch. Their energy and passion to further Reproductive Freedom is astounding and crucial. Finally, on a personal note, I look at my children and think about their future. I want to be sure that I have done everything I possibly could to make it better for each of them, for all the children in our community and beyond. They give me strength. They give me a reason to keep going.
We will celebrate Repro Shabbat and renew our energy to further the fight. If you can’t join us in person, join us online. If you want to create your own ritual, celebrate Repro Shabbat at home with this PDF or visit the NCJW website to learn about other ways to get involved with Reproductive Justice beyond this weekend.
Together, we will make Reproductive Freedom a reality. Together, we will make the world a better, safer, healthier place.
