Carrie Barrera

Dear CBI Community,

It is a privilege to share a few words with you in this week’s Mishpacha Spotlight. My name is Carrie Beth Barrera, and I have the honor of serving as the Executive Assistant to the Clergy here at Congregation Beth Israel.

In my role, I work closely with our rabbis and cantorial soloist to ensure that the spiritual, pastoral, and communal needs of our congregation are met with care and attention. Each day involves a variety of responsibilities — coordinating life-cycle events, assisting with services and programs, supporting holiday preparations, and serving as a first point of contact for congregants reaching out to the clergy.

Though much of my work takes place behind the scenes, I see it as essential to the rhythm of our congregational life. The details I manage are not only logistical; they are acts of service that help create the conditions for meaningful prayer, celebration, and connection.

A Little About Me

I grew up in Skokie, IL but was born in Mission, TX. When I moved to Austin 5 years ago, I went to get my driver’s license for Texas. The person at the DMV did not believe that I did not have Texas driver license already. They asked at least three times if I was certain I did not have a Texas driver’s license? They just could not understand why I would have Texas birth certificate and never had a Texas driver license. I had to explain to this person; I was born here (Texas) but did not grow up here. My daughter Leah even asked what was going on (ha-ha). Finally, the DMV worker accepted what I said was true and gave me my driver's license.

I joined the CBI staff a year ago this September, and from the very beginning, I felt embraced as part of this community. Before coming to CBI, I worked in the restaurant industry for 20 plus years. I wore many hats in the restaurants I worked for such as, hostess, server and then an office manager. I learned how to fore see what a guest needed before they asked and learned how to be a strong multi-tasker. I also worked for seven years as a religious school teacher for my congregation back in IL. When I moved to Austin, I continued to be religious school teacher at CBI. I taught kindergarten for 1 year and for the past 4 years I have been teaching pre-k.

My personal connection to Jewish life has always been a guiding force for me. Whether through synagogue involvement or holiday traditions with my family, I have long felt drawn to roles that strengthen Jewish community. At CBI, I have the opportunity to bring that passion into my professional life every day. What inspires me most in this position is the opportunity to walk alongside our community in moments of both joy and challenge. I am continually moved by the warmth, resilience, and dedication that define CBI. To be part of this Mishpacha — this family — is a true honor.

Next time you’re in the building, please stop by and say hello. It’s an honor to support our clergy and to serve this incredible congregation. Thank you for letting me be part of your lives.

With gratitude,
Carrie Beth Barrera (CB)
